Background:

Abbott’s art training began in the 1960s with a foundation in Fine Art and Photography at the Laguna School of Art and Design (Laguna Beach, CA) and Chouinards Art School (Los Angeles, CA).  Abbott continued his photography studies at the Academy of Art and the Art Institute (both in San Francisco, CA) in the 1970s.

Teaching:

Abbott views teaching as a fundamental element of his life’s work.  He has taught photography to groups and individuals, and finds the experience both inspiring and rewarding.  In 1971 Abbott led a photographic bicycle tour for ten teenagers from Montreal, Canada to Halifax, Nova Scotia, teaching photography fundamentals and photojournalism in a “hands-on” learning environment.  Abbott’s favorite places to visit, photograph and/or teach include the dunes of Death Valley and Point Lobos on the Monterey Peninsula.

Traveling:

In 1985 Abbott embarked on what would be a 6 month journey through the United States, shooting photographs of people and landscapes as he went.  During these travels, he became keenly aware of the American propensity for creating garbage, and this awareness became the inspiration for "What Man Throws Away," an ongoing photo series which explores what we so freely dismiss as rubbish, often unaware of its devastating impact on our environment.

Following his tour of the United States, Abbott spent eleven months in Europe, traveling throughout Belgium, England, France, Germany, Holland and Switzerland, capturing images of the beauty of each nation’s landscapes and people.

In addition to traveling abroad, Abbott continues to travel through the United States in order to discover and record as much of the American experience as possible.

Alaskan Trek:

In 1989, Alaska beckoned, and there Abbott found not only the Alaskan landscape to be even more beautiful than any one can imagine. Spending four months photographing, after taking a Alaskan Ferry from Port Hardy on Vancouver Island through the Inland Passage to Haines, Alaska. Then driving up through the Yukon Territory and back in to Alaska and down to Valdez, to check out the Valdez oil spill and see if he could get photos of the spill and the impact on the environment. But Abbott was chased out of Valdez by the

What Man Throws Away:

In traveling around the country Abbott has found an immense amount of items from appliances to vehicles, thrown by the side of roads, front and back yards just about anywhere that things can be thrown. Looking at all of this, it seems that the people who throw all of this stuff away just don't care, sad as it may seem. But then again, what does someone do with an old chair (left) thrown out into a lake bed when there was still some water in the lake bed. First found in 1984. I went back each time on visiting the area that would be at least 3 times a year, on each visit I went see if the chair was there and then photographed the chair in different states of despair until it had been removed in 1987.

Home Alone:

A collection of images collected from homes Abbott has visited and or stayed at..  This surprising collection features objects from bottles of any sort to most anything found in someone's house, with a number of surprises in between.  This portfolio would be an excellent gift for the person who has everything. While traveling or just staying at friends houses, Abbott will see many things to photograph in someone's house or a motel room. Where ever he has stayed, he has always found objects to photograph.

Nude

Nudes:

This collection of images of the female body, with emphasis on women over the age of 40, reflects Abbott’s appreciation for subjects who have a strong sense of their own beauty and dignity.  This portfolio is must for anyone who appreciates the female form.

Martini Glass
Martini Glasses:

Being a Martini drinker, Abbott has amassed an impressive collection of martini glasses which he has tested extensively for functionality.  In the interest of both science and art, Abbott presents this photo series, which documents the pouring of high quality vodka into the glasses, followed by the removal of such vodka from the glasses.  (Note: No vodka was wasted during the performance of these photographs.)  Martini Portfolio is recommended for anyone who appreciates the confluence of form and function… and vodka.
